The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is pleased to announce free field trips for school groups organized by Park County, Wyoming, schools. The program is made possible by the generous support of the Stephen M. Seay Foundation and two anonymous donors. The free admission for these school-sponsored groups is currently in effect for the 2014 – 2015 academic year, and includes all K – 12 classes in the county.
“The Center wants to be a resource for all students in the Cody, Powell, and Meeteetse school districts,” explains Megan Smith, School Services Coordinator for the Center’s Interpretive Education Department. “This new program makes it as easy as possible for teachers to sign up for a field trip and build upon the classroom experience they provide at school.” The Center’s school programming meets state standards and benchmarks.
School services covered under the Park County schools free field trip program include educator-led guided tours, self-guided/teacher-led tours, and Museum Adventures. “We want teachers and students to embrace our offerings and celebrate their western heritage,” adds Smith, “without either teachers or students having to struggle to pay for a field trip.” The free admission also applies for home schoolers in Park County visiting the Center on educational field trips.
Teachers should continue to register for field trips—both guided and self-guided—and Museum Adventures online through the “Learn” section of the Center’s website, or by contacting Smith at [email protected] or 307-578-4028. Schools should note that fees for the Center’s Draper Museum Raptor Experience are not covered through the new program.
The Center also offers additional free resources for all school groups, including the new “Borrow a Backpack” program and Skype in the classroom lessons. “While these are always free, we do require advanced registration for them as well,” says Smith. “This way we can ensure the availability of on-site resources on the day of a class’s arrival, and Skype lessons when scheduled.” Those interested can visit the School Programs section of the Center’s website to find out more.
