Enjoy a free book signing and lecture with author and photographer Penny Wolin at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West August 25. Her newly released book, Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry, discusses the connection between Jewish ancestry and the practice of photography. As a portrait photographer and visual anthropologist, she connects the relationship between modern America, photography, and Jewish culture.
Wolin spent eight years traveling the United States and interacting with more than seventy of the most original American photographers in history. She photographed and interviewed each individual, while discussing the possible connection between Jewish ancestry and the art of taking photographs.
After this first phase, she then re-photographed their heirloom ancestral photographs dating from the mid-1850s to the present day, and later received permission to reproduce a meaningful image from each of the photographers’ own original works. With these three, distinct levels of photographs and interviews, the iconic events and individuals of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries unfold through the practice of photography.
During this audio-visual lecture, Wolin describes her perspective and personal vision of self-identity as an American-Jewish artist. She uses excerpts from her interviews, as well as photographs of the notable photographers and their ancestors. Within this multi-layer process, Wolin sheds light on the photographers’ views on the photographic medium, as well as its intersection with American culture.
This lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Center’s Coe Auditorium with the book signing to follow. For more information about this event, please contact Gretchen Henrich, Director of the Interpretive Education Division, at [email protected], or call her at 307-578-4061.
