For the vast majority of museums and visitors, Smithsonian magazine’s annual Museum Day is a great opportunity: Museums get exposure, and visitors get free admission to a thousand or so museums throughout America. For the Buffalo Bill Center of the West? It’s a case of good news/bad news.
The irony is that periodically Museum Day takes place on the Saturday—this year, September 23—which coincides with the Center’s busiest day of the year: Patrons Ball.
“As the only Smithsonian Affiliate in Wyoming, we’re honored to participate in Museum Day,” Marguerite House, the Center’s Media Coordinator says. “It’s just a bit hectic, that’s all. That said, we definitely encourage people with Museum Day passes to join us that day. As they visit our galleries, they may have to dodge a ladder here and there, hear the band tuning up, circumvent the cases of china, or be asked to tie a bow or arrange some flowers!”
Museum Day Live! is inclusive by design, and fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. This is the day when the Center grants free access to visitors who download a Museum Day Live! ticket at smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-live-2017. The event drew more than 200,000 visitors to museums across the country in 2016, and this year, organizers expect a record turnout.
“Our goal is to consistently provide a quality experience for our visitors; Museum Day Live! on September 23 makes this just a bit of a challenge,” House explains. “However, with eleven hundred museums participating, there had to be one for whom Museum Day didn’t quite fit the schedule. It looks like this year it’s us.”
To receive the free 13th Annual Museum Day Live! ticket for two people only, register for an account at smithsonianmag.com/museumday. Once registered, you can request a non-transferable ticket to one participating venue. The ticket will be available to download immediately up to the date of the event. You must print your ticket and present it to receive your free admission or have it accessible on your mobile device. #MuseumDayLive
