It’s become a tradition in the Buffalo Bill Center of the Wes’s fall lineup of Family Fun Days and a “must-do” activity in Cody. It’s “Hootin’ Howlin’ Halloween,” and it takes place the Friday before Halloween—October 27, 2 – 4:30 p.m.
Now in its seventh year, the event is coordinated by the Center’s Interpretive Education Department and combines education, fun, and treats. As with all Family Fun Days, activities include hands-on crafts and a take-home project.
Interpretive Specialist and Natural Science Educator Emily Buckles encourages participants to come in costume. “A favorite part of our Halloween Family Fun Day,” says Buckles, “is always trick or treating through our Draper Natural History Museum.”
Along the way, families can stop to listen to spooky stories, judge Center staffers’ entries in the annual pumpkin-carving contest, and learn about nocturnal animals—those that are active at night. “The live owls from our Draper Museum Raptor Experience help us out as we teach about those nighttime critters,” notes Buckles.
“Hootin’ Howlin’ Halloween” is free for Center of the West member families, and just $10 for non-member families. Family Fun Days are sponsored in part through a generous grant from the R. Harold Burton Foundation. For more information on this and all family-oriented activities at the Center, e-mail Emily Buckes or call 307-578-4110.
Future Family Fun Days continue the seasonal theme with FallFest on November 17, WinterFest on January 19, and SpringFest on March 16.
