YELLOWSTONE'S EAST GATE IS OPEN: HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

As of Monday, May 18th at 12 p.m., the East Gate of Yellowstone will be open on a limited basis, following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), The White House, and state and local public health authorities.  

Visitors who travel through Cody to the East Gate will have access to the Lower Loop of Yellowstone, which includes stops such as Old Faithful, Canyon Village, West Thumb Geyser Basin, Norris Geyser Basin, Lake Village, Grant Village, and other stops as outlined in the National Park Service’s (NPS) three-phase COVID-19 reopening plan. Please read this document for the NPS’s projected timeline for opening the Park. 

What does this mean for trip planners and travelers? Read the info below to gain a better understanding of current conditions and what you’ll need to keep in mind if you’re travelling through the area at this time. 

WHEN THE EAST GATE OF YELLOWSTONE OPENS ON MAY 18TH...

CAN I STAY IN YELLOWSTONE?

Hotels and campgrounds in Yellowstone are currently closed. However, many hotels in Cody are open.

ARE RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS OPEN IN YELLOWSTONE?

Limited food operations and shops will be open.  New procedures will be put in place to mitigate risk for visitors. Full-service dining establishments are closed. Self service gas stations will be open.

HOW DO I HANDLE SOCIAL DISTANCING?

The NPS will monitor high-traffic areas of Yellowstone but says it’s up to guests to follow CDC guidelines and keep a distance of at least six feet from other visitors. Necessities like public restrooms will be disinfected on a routine basis and may be modified to keep social distancing in mind. 

HOW LONG WILL THESE RESTRICTIONS LAST?

All timelines in the NPS’s three-phase plan are conditional and could be modified at any time based on current COVID-19 circumstances.

ARE HOTELS OPEN IN CODY?

Many hotels in Cody are currently open with new cleanliness procedures in place. Check online or call local hotels for more up-to-date information. 

ARE RESTAURANTS OPEN IN CODY?

Restaurants in Cody are open. Many offer curbside delivery, outdoor seating, and to-go options as well as traditional indoor seating with some limitations.

MUSEUM INFO

IS THE CENTER OF THE WEST OPEN?

The Center of the West is open to visitors with guidance and support from the Park County Health Department. Our half-a-million square-foot campus offers ample room to practice social distancing, and personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer are available.
