Taos Indians in the Sunlight

This is one of about a dozen known paintings depicting a view west from Sharp's front gate down Kit Carson Road.  In each, the background wall changes slightly. The series, begun about 1916, starts with the wall standing ten or twelve feet tall around a solid gate. (see related image, #618) By 1926, when the later versions of the painting were completed, the wall has deteriorated considerably, revealing the house of one of Sharp's neighbors, Romero, across the road.  (see related image, #215)
