In 2013, artist John Hull created a series of paintings on The Sporting Life. A few of these works centered around the Johnson County Fair and Rodeo in Buffalo, Wyoming, where Hull sketched while an artist-in-residence at the Ucross Foundation. One of the paintings from this series, Ropers, 2013, is now in the permanent collection at the Whitney Western Art Museum. We hope you enjoy this clip of the artist speaking on his painting, Ropers.
Hull later became an artist-in-residence at the Whitney Western Art Museum in August 2013. While a resident, Hull took the opportunity to sketch the Cody Night Rodeo. This series was exhibited in June, 2014 at the Simpson Gallagher Gallery in Cody. While in town, the artist stopped by the Center to conduct a full interview on his life and work.
This interview with John Hull is a part of the Whitney’s Art Speaks series that captures in-depth interviews and features short clips on the artists in our permanent collection.
