The Unknown
By R.V. Greeves
1985
Location: Braun Garden
Made to honor the Plains Indians, this sculpture represents the human race at the beginning of time, when much of the earth was unknown. R.V. Greeves chose familiar faces of mixed ancestry from the Shoshone Wind River Reservation as his models for the sculpture.
Greeves wraps the figures in their traditional buffalo robes and native dress, huddling together they symbolize the importance of maintaining tradition, while looking outward toward the unforeseeable changes that the future will bring.
R.V. Greeves (b. 1935). The Unknown, 1985. Bronze, H 108 x W 92. Gift of Marjorie May Braun through the Braun Foundation. 69.86
