The Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, has earned several top honors in True West magazine’s “Best of the West” awards for 2019. Of the five readers’ choice awards earned this year, three of them—including “Best Western Museum”—have now been bestowed on the Center for the third year in a row.
The popular western magazine’s editorial staff and readers choose their favorites in a broad spectrum of categories each year—everything from museums and collections, to restaurants and shows, to re-enactments and apparel. A compilation of all the votes determines the Editor’s Choice Award and the Readers’ Choice Award in each category.
The three repeat awards earned by the Center since 2017 include “Best Western Museum” for the Center as a whole; “Best American Indian Collection” for the Center’s Plains Indian Museum; and “Best Western Art Gallery” for its Whitney Western Art Museum.
New this year are the readers’ choice awards for the Center in the category of “Best Western Collectibles Gallery,” and for the Center Store in the category of “Best Western History Book Store.”
“We are so excited by this recognition,” says Peter S. Seibert, the Center’s new Executive Director and CEO. “The Buffalo Bill Center of the West prides itself on how we can connect with our visitors.” He adds, “We are very appreciative to the readers of True West for their support and endorsement of our museum and programs.”
In addition the Center’s awards, Cody, Wyoming, and other local landmarks and productions also received True West “Best of the West” awards in the heritage travel category:
- Town of Cody: “Best Place to Live Like an Old West Cowboy”
- Old Trail Town: readers’ choice for “Best Architecturally Preserved Western Town”
- Chamberlin Inn: “Best Heritage Bed & Breakfast”
- Irma Hotel: readers’ choice for “Best Historic Saloon of the West”
- Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Buffalo Bill Wild West Show: “Best Wild West Show”
