letter to Powhatan Clarke
Catalogue Number: 01215b
Credit Line: Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis, Missouri
Inscription: I am doing a big painting and I aint sure of my tactics. Its this. You see they are coming like hell & I want to get the title "Right front into line, come on!" The "Come on" is all in the expression of the officer & the bugler is blowing the charge- I am going to have the men with the carbines instead of sabers- the dead horse or pony tells of the trouble in front as does the faces of the men. I thought I would call it "The Relief Column" etc. the above you see. The men are large on the right & trotting while as they go away they begin to go faster & faster until on the far left they are turning double back handsprings- now is this right. "The Relief Column-"Right front into line, come on." Of course all I want is to say a little and then have my tactics right. You cant give the whole of Upton in a title
