The Sharps are known to have visited Alaska in August, 1900 where this portrait was  painted. Mary was a Chilkat Indian from Sitka.  A label affixed to this work reads: "Mary Koshta - daughter of a Chilkat chief (Alaska). Goes to school & speaks good English."
