Chief Little Wolf - Cheyenne

Penciled on verso: Cheyenne Chief Little Wolf Cheyenne

This is a most distinguished portrait of Laban Little Wolf. Sharp's comments in the Gilcrease Foundation's catalogue of his 1949 retrospective mistakenly refers to this as Laban's uncle who Sharp painted in 1899 but who had died by 1905.

This may be the version of Little Wolf that Sharp entered in the 12th annual exhibition of American art at the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1905 and then sent to his New York exhibition in 1906 at the Fishel, Adler & Schwartz Galleries.
