Penciled on paper glued to backing: Chief Bear in the Cloud - Crow- 1906-10 In his war regalia - later became Chief of Indian Police, with - swell outfit & shoulder straps. Big man and exacted obedience- Personally a dandy- wore four earrings in each ear, his dress always elaborate. Most proud of his police position

 

This portrait was exhibited in 1906 in New York at the Fishel, Adler & Schwartz Galleries, in Cincinnati's Closson Galleries in 1908, in Indianapolis also in 1908, and back in Cincinnati in 1912 and 1916. When Cole purchased it is unknown.
