Old Crow, Crow; [Old Crow]

Penciled on dust cover: Old Crow - 1904-10 - not sure - Last great war chief.

Given the labeling and signature style, this painting was completed sometime in or before 1902.

Sharp seemed to revere this man primarily because, as a "great war chief" among the Crows he had "called off many battles against the whites, as well as war against his Indian enemies." He was also praised by the artist because he was "The first Indian to plant a seed in the ground, and always for the advancement of his people." (Letter Sharp to Butler, 2/15/04, Sharp Papers)
