Earlier portraits of Flat Iron, painted in 1900, were exhibited at the pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. (see #s 545, 576 and 572 for example) This later version was described as a portrait of "A medicine chief of the Oglala Sioux, who had nine wives and seventy-five children." (Gilcrease Museum archives)
