There were six portraits of Flat Iron exhibited at the Cincinnati Museum in 1900 and again at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC in 1901. This was one of those works. It was purchased by Mrs. Hearst in 1902. (sales ledgers, Sharp Papers)
A portrait in this same pose but without the hat sold to the Smithsonian’s director, William Henry Holmes in 1901. Holmes later donated it to his museum. (see related image, #217)
