The War Chief

This painting is remarkably similar to another oil in the Gilcrease Museum collection, Chant to the War Bonnet (#82). The sizes are about the same and the central and right hand figures are repeated, Frank Bawling Deer and John Hunting Son. The older gentleman, who probably painted the robe, is not identified. The two paintings were exhibited together in Indian and Other Paintings, at the Traxel Art Galleries, Cincinnati, 1927.
