In celebration of the Center of the West’s Buffalo Nation: America at 250, the McCracken Research Library invites readers to explore the powerful history, ecology, and cultural legacy of the American bison through a thoughtfully curated four-book series. Participants may join either in person or virtually, making this book club accessible to readers everywhere.
The series opens with American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon by Steven Rinella—part hunting narrative, part cultural history—examining the bison’s profound influence on the American landscape and national identity. A winner of the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award, the book blends personal storytelling with deep historical insight.
As a special highlight, author Steven Rinella will speak at Cody Culture Club on February 12. Book club members are strongly encouraged to attend. Purchase tickets from Cody Culture Club. Join us for engaging discussion, meaningful scholarship, and a deeper understanding of one of America’s most enduring icons.

Book Availability
Points West Market at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West will offer American Buffalo for purchase. In addition, the Park County Public Library will provide a limited number of copies of each selected title for checkout several weeks prior to each meeting.
The McCracken Research Library maintains noncirculating copies of all book club selections, available for on-site reading in the McCracken Library Reading Room during regular museum hours. Audiobook editions of all titles are also offered across multiple platforms.
