Riders of the Buffalo Nation
Riders of the Buffalo Nations
Step into the world of contemporary Native American rodeo with Riders of the Buffalo Nations, a breathtaking photography exhibition by Amsterdam-based artist Doug Hancock. Against the sweeping landscapes of the Black Hills and Montana’s rolling hills, Hancock captures the skill, courage, and spirit of today’s Native cowboys and cowgirls.
Shot in the summer of 2022 on Kodak film, this collection of still images and film footage honors the legacy of the Buffalo Riders—Indigenous horsemen whose exceptional horsemanship traces back to the historic buffalo hunts. Today, these skills live on in rodeo arenas, Indian Relay Races, powwows, and cultural festivals, maintaining a deep connection to the American Bison and tribal traditions.
Experience Identity, Rodeo, and Community
Hancock’s photographs tell a story across three themes:
Identity: Meet the riders, bull fighters, and trainers who embody the legacy of Native rodeo.
Rodeo: Explore rodeo culture on the Pine Ridge and Northern Cheyenne Reservations and beyond.
Community: Witness Indian Relay Races, powwows, and gatherings that celebrate tribal heritage and togetherness.
Hancock’s month-long journey through the Black Hills and Northern Plains brought him close to the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne communities. His portraits—ranging from bold color to evocative black-and-white—capture champions, youth, and the landscapes that shape their lives. In his words, the project revealed “the spirit of collectivism…a sense of collective identity and strength” that resonates through every image.
