Translated from the Native Hidatsa language, “Sacagawea” means “Bird Woman.” Sacagawea is celebrated as a skilled navigator, captive, wife, mother, guide, and translator. Sculptor Greeves chose to depict her infant son in a traditional cradle on her back.
