Amelia: Short-eared Owl

About the Bird:

Amelia is a female Short-eared Owl who hatched an undetermined number of years ago. She was found near Gillette, Wyoming, after being tangled up in a barbed wire fence. Due to the damage to her left wing, it had to be amputated at the elbow and she can no longer fly.

General Species Info:

Short-eared Owls are one of the world’s most widely distributed owls, found on every single continent except Antarctica and Australia.

Short-eared Owls live in large, open areas with low vegetation, including prairie and coastal grasslands, meadows, sagebrush, savanna, marshes, and agricultural areas.

Short-eared Owls eat mostly small mammals, especially mice and voles, but also eat smaller birds.

Notes from Staff:

Amelia has some stunning stares that she gives the audiences. When fully relaxed during programs, many can watch her shake her feathers out or yawn.
