Penciled on verso: Crucita and Hunting Son – Taos / My favorite models for many years – / Hall Door and Well House – J.H. Sharp. Ink on verso: This painting is for my Peggy’s – Jan – 1949 / Larro McKenzie
A painting with a similar title, Crucita in the Studio Door, and measurements appeared in Sharp’s annual Cincinnati exhibition in the late fall of 1923.Three years later, 1926, Sharp sold a painting titled Doorway, Hollyhocks, Well House / Figure to C. A. Dunham of Glencoe, IL (sales ledgers, Sharp Papers) That may be this work which pictures the lattice decorated well house through the two open doors. However, Sharp listed the measurements as only 16 x 20 inches.
A photograph of this painting in the Sharp Papers has on the verso an inscription by the artist suggesting yet another title, Afternoon Shadows (An Old Doorway in Taos). A painting titled Afternoon Shadows was exhibited at the Traxel Art Galleries in 1927, #19.
