Hand, Sioux; [Hand]

Hand, as a Government scout, was famous for surviving the massacre of Wounded Knee in 1890.

This portrait appears to be a companion work to one painted about 1900 and sold to Phoebe Hearst (related image, # 156). Another slightly different view went to the Smithsonian Institution, #243. These three were a part of a set of four portraits of this Sioux man in Sharp's Cincinnati Museum exhibition of 1900.
