Sharp's sales ledgers indicate that Gilcrease purchased this still life directly from the artist in January 1950. (Sharp Papers) There are three other known versions of peonies that are somewhat smaller than this (30 x 36 in.) in public collections. (see #s 490, 724 and 675)
