This portrait was initially displayed at the Cincinnati Museum in October of 1900.  It appeared a year later at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC where it was purchased by the Smithsonian Institution.

 

Another version of this man's portrait was purchased by Joseph Butler in 1912. (see related image, #344)
