Penciled on duster cover on verso: 1904 Chief Running Rabbit Blackfeet. Inscribed on paper attached to dust cover: Blackfeet were Sun Worshipers – In his teepee one day, we saw the priest go by – Running Rabbit said: There goes the black robe, a very fine man. They tell me there are many conflicting religions – As for me, see that sun? It brings the rains, it makes the grass grow – it keeps me warm, I feel it.
This painting, titled Chief Running Rabbit, was exhibited in Boston’s St Botolph Club in 1903.
