Inscribed on paper attached to dust cover: Old Coyote Cheyenne - 1898 Lame Deer, Mont. Penciled on dust cover: 1898 Old Coyote, Cheyenne Custer Battle, and many others - Has his old war paint on for the portrait - Imprint of hand on shirt represents blood of enemy, or power.

 

Sharp did not arrive among the Cheyenne until 1899 and, given the signature style, this work probably dates from 1903 or after.
