Chief Joseph

It is thought that this portrait, titled Chief Joseph, was fist displayed at the St. Botolph Club in Boston in early 1903. Sharp had visited the Northwest the previous summer where the somber Nez Perce chief sat for him.

According to Sharp's sales ledgers, this portrait sold to Cole in July, 1928 for $450. He titled it Head of Chief Joseph. (Sharp Papers)
