In pencil on verso: John Enos Flathead

Sharp ascribed serious historical deeds to this very old man in his note for the Gilcrease Foundation's 1949 retrospective exhibition catalogue. "A Flathead Indian of the Shoshone Reservation. Acted as guide for Captain Bonneville in 1832 and in same capacity was with Fremont when he climbed Fremont's Peak."
