Standing Soldier, Sioux; [Chief Standing Soldier]

Sharp suggested in his notes for this portrait that he painted Sitting Bull in 1915-6.  Sitting Bull had died in 1890 and Sharp probably never saw or met him although he painted at least two portraits of the great chief from D. F. Barry photographs.  (see for example #26).

Inscribed on paper attached to dust cover: 1905 Chief Standing Soldier. Sioux. "Another warrior of reputation. Many of the noted Sioux were painted at Pine Ridge -1905-6 Red Cloud, Sitting Bull & etc. Lived around there after one or two painted it was easy to get most of the others. Most of them wanted to dress up in old time regalia, or have something on representing their past greatness
