Penciled on dust cover: Elk River – Cheyenne 1897-8 Every Cheyenne, Sioux & others that could carry a gun were in the Custer Battle – Elk River put on his regular old war paint – in battle they painted their bodies also.  Sharp described him in the catalogue for his 1947 Tulsa retrospective exhibition, as "A warrior in the Custer battle, wearing his old war paint."
