Penciled on dust cover: Elk River - Cheyenne 1897-8 Every Cheyenne, Sioux & others that could carry a gun were in the Custer Battle - Elk River put on his regular old war paint - in battle they painted their bodies also.  Sharp described him in the catalogue for his 1947 Tulsa retrospective exhibition, as "A warrior in the Custer battle, wearing his old war paint."
