According to Sharp’s sales ledgers, this painting, titled Cheyenne Medicine Prayer, sold to Mrs. Hearst in June 1904. A smaller variation of this theme, Cheyenne Medicine Teepee, was offered at Sharp’s 1923 exhibition, Indian Paintings and Western Landscapes and Sketches in Africa and Spain at Cincinnati’s Traxel Art Galleries. Its style, palette and subject suggest that this smaller version was probably also painted around 1904.
