Man Seated on Stool

The Cincinnati Art Museum owns two student drawings in pencil by Sharp made in his Munich studio (see # 701) over the winter of 1886 and 1887. These are exercises in draftsmanship, volumes and proportions.  Whether they were assignments or simply for practice is not known.

Back in Cincinnati at this time, Sharp was known for his pastel portraits as well. (see for example, #270)  His practice in Munich went beyond academic drawing to pastels, a medium in which he seemed to achieve a more compelling sense of humanity and personal report. (see #298a)
