On brass plate: Bear in the Cloud Crow, a natural Beau Brummel – also an orator-. Illegible inscription in blue pencil on canvas.
This version of the Crow chief was one of two portraits (see related image, #550 and an earlier likeness sold to Phoebe Hearst in about 1902, #123) of this distinguished dandy of a Crow chief. It was widely exhibited, beginning in New York at the Fishel, Adler and Schwartz Galleries in 1906, then in Cincinnati and Indianapolis in 1908, and in Cincinnati again in 1912 and 1916.
