Sly, secretive, mysterious, and rare, the wolverine has long captured our curiosity and imagination. But behind the myths and legends is a remarkable animal that has called the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem home for more than a century.

Join renowned wildlife tracker and educator Dr. James “Jim” Halfpenny for a fascinating look at the wolverine’s history, ecology, and continuing presence in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Drawing on decades of research, tracking, and field experience, Halfpenny will trace what is known about Yellowstone’s wolverines, from early historical reports to recent encounters and evidence of a population that may be increasing.

Halfpenny will explore where wolverines have been documented, what scientists and citizens have learned about this elusive species, and the challenges that remain in understanding and protecting it. The presentation will conclude with a look at how citizen scientists can contribute to ongoing efforts to document wolverines and help protect their future.

Dr. James Halfpenny is a scientist, educator, explorer, and author who has taught programs in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem for 56 seasons. He is the president and owner of A Naturalist’s World and Track Scene Investigation, a forensic wildlife tracking organization based in Gardiner, Montana. His specialties include carnivores, climate change, alpine ecology, and winter ecology. Halfpenny has authored more than 30 books and numerous scientific and popular articles and annually produces the Wolf Chart of Yellowstone National Park.
