Lady Pretty Blanket

Gift of Dorothy Durand Garrett, in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Archer Leslie Durand. It is not known when Mr. Durand bought this portrait, but probably in June 1940 when he acquired a large group of Sharp paintings for $2,175.(sales ledgers, Sharp Papers)

Lady Pretty Blanket was a young Blackfeet woman when Sharp painted her. The earliest known version was completed in 1902 and sold to Phoebe Hearst early the next year. (related image, #204). The later  portrait seen here had a busy exhibition history. Records of this work being exhibited begin in late 1906 when the portrait was shown in New York at the Fishel, Adler & Schwartz Galleries, then at the Closson Galleries in Cincinnati in 1908, the St. Louis Art Museum in 1908, the Swan Art Gallery in Kansas City in 1909, the University Club in Cincinnati in 1912, the Hotel Gibson Galleries in Cincinnati in 1916 and at the Traxel Art Galleries in Cincinnati as late as 1927. Sharp did not sell the painting, though, until 1940.
