It is thought that Phoebe Hearst acquired this affectionate portrait along with 78 other "Indian portraits, pictures & studies" in December 1901. (sales ledgers, Sharp Papers) Despite that assumption, this portrait, or another unknown version of it, were widely exhibited in such places as New York’s National Arts Club in December 1902 and Boston at the St. Botolph Club in January 1903 It also appeared in the10th Exhibition of the Cincinnati Art Club in the spring of 1903.
