White Paint Mountain (Old War Chief)

Penciled on verso: Mr. Walter Miller / Glendale / Ohio. Engraved label: White Paint Mountain / Old War Chief / 1859 J.H.Sharp 1953 (Sharp's sales ledgers for September 1919 record two sales to Walter H.. Miller which probably includes this work. (Sharp Papers)

In 1916 at Cincinnati's Hotel Gibson galleries a painting titled White Paint Mountain was exhibited for what is probably the first time. Given the dramatic  firelight effect, similar to another work in that show, The War Bonnet, this would fit the style of his paintings at this period. (related image, #12) A painting titled  White Paint Mountain (By Firelight) was exhibited in the same venue in 1919.  It was probably this work as well.
