This is a field study for one of Sharp's major burial scenes, Mourning Her Brave of 1901 now in a private collection. (see related image, #393a). This may be the painting titled Grave in Cottonwood Tree displayed along with three other burial scenes at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY.
