Penciled on verso: 1898-1900 Chief Rain the Face Sioux. Penciled on notepaper glued on verso: Rain in the Face – Sioux. With Gall, the two great Chiefs in the Custer Battle. 1894-6.
Rain in the Face died in the fall of 1905. This was probably painted from life, but the signature type on this portrait suggests a date after 1902.
Sharp did a second portrait of Rain in the Face in about 1903. (see related image, #451)
