On paper attached to dust cover: Birds all over the Ground Crow - 1904 - His coat a clever work of craftsmanship - Deer or Elk skin - only the belly opening - no seams - forelegs make the sleeves. In tanning enough fur left for collar - came below the knees. Stuffed weasel probably has his umbilical cord & other medicine in it. This canvas was scorched in a fire where I lost 15 other portraits.
This oil, or #305, was probably the version exhibited a couple of years after it was completed, in New York at the Fishel, Adler & Schwartz Galleries in 1906.
