Penciled on dust cover: "Chief Spotted Eagle, Blk’ft 1902-5." On paper attached to dust cover: "Chief Spotted Eagle-Blk’ft-1902-5 Indian tribes had many chiefs-sub-chiefs / + ets [sic] like U.S.Army. From Generals on down."
 
Walter McClintock, the photographer, described Spotted Eagle as "a noted medicine man, who made a specialty of the Sun-dance ceremonial." (Grafe, 2009, 133)
