Ex-Governor of Taos

A painting of this title (#172) appeared in the Cosmos Club exhibition, Special Exhibition of Indian Portraits from Life in Washington, DC in December 1901. It was purchased by Phoebe Hearst around 1902. (see related image,  #172)

Sharp displayed another very different version of possibly the same man several years later.  It may be this later version, shown in New York at the Fishel, Adler & Schwartz Gallery in 1906 and The Closson Galleries in Cincinnati in 1908,  is this painting. Despite its exhibition history, the signature type on this work suggests it was painted before 1903.
