This portrait of a Sioux man, known for surviving the Wounded Knee Massacre, was exhibited along with three other versions at the Cincinnati Museum in 1900 and at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC in 1901. It was purchased by the Smithsonian from the latter show.

 

Two other versions of Hand were produced in 1900.  See #s 156 and 409.
