This portrait was exhibited at the Cincinnati Museum in 1900 where Butler may have seen it. It was purchased by Butler in November 1901 according to Sharp’s sales ledgers. (Sharp Papers) In the catalogue for the Cincinnati exhibition there were four versions of this man’s portrait. Others went on to future shows in Buffalo, NY and Washington, DC.
