Special Edition Release – Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd

Available beginning Saturday, July 4 at the Points West Market
The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is pleased to announce the release of a special edition of Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd, a striking new publication from Yellowstone Forever that explores the history, ecology, and extraordinary recovery of Yellowstone National Park’s iconic bison herd.
Written by Yellowstone National Park Bison Manager Chris Geremia and featuring powerful photography and field insight from acclaimed wildlife photographer Tom Murphy, the book traces the ongoing story of America’s last wild bison—how they have endured, adapted, and remain essential to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Murphy reflects on his 45-year pursuit of the species, calling the project a visual record of “the beauty, power, and resilience of Yellowstone’s wild bison.”
This special edition opens with a prologue from Arthur Middleton, Tucker Russell, and Kristin Barker of the Beyond Yellowstone Living Lab, underscoring the significance of Tribal-led bison restoration efforts across sovereign lands, including the Wind River Indian Reservation. These perspectives echo the themes at the heart of the Center’s forthcoming landmark exhibition, Buffalo Nation, opening August 2026.
“The publication of Yellowstone Bison is especially timely,” said Rebecca West, CEO and Executive Director of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. “Chris Geremia and Tom Murphy have created a powerful tribute to one of North America’s most iconic animals and the ongoing efforts to ensure its future.”
Through vivid imagery, historical context, and firsthand observation, Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd reveals both the majesty of the species and the evolving human responsibility to keep wild bison truly wild. A portion of proceeds supports Yellowstone National Park’s bison conservation efforts.
