Dividing the Chief

This large canvas was probably painted early in Sharp's tenure as a Crow Agency residence. This was given to Carolyn Riebeth, the daughter of Sharp's friend, Samuel G. Reynolds who was agent for the Crow Reservation during some of Sharp's tenure at Crow Agency. It is unsigned and appears to be one of two studies for a larger, more finished work, Dividing the Chief's Estate, #70. For a full description of the relationship between these three works, see entry #70.

This and many other works by Sharp that were purchased by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in 1961 with money from the Whitney Purchase Fund, were acquired by Carolyn Riebeth from Sharp as a gift at some point before he sold the house in 1934.
