Sharp, in a note to Frank Phillips in the early 1940s, wrote that Bill Jones was "a superb scout and great favorite of the officers of old Fort Belknap." He was also "a Custer Battle warrior." He was given the name of Bill Jones by the soldiers and used it the rest of his life. He had, according to the artist, "plenty of local color." (Woolaroc archives)
Sharp painted several other versions of Bill Jones’ portrait. Two examples can be seen in #s 265 and 248b.
