This painting, with its virtuoso brushwork and dark, rich palette, suggests Munich school influences despite the fact that the artist had just recently returned from two years studying in France.
In Sharp’s 1949 Tulsa retrospective, An Exhibition of Oil Paintings by Joseph Henry Sharp at the Gilcrease Foundation, a similar portrait is listed as Bill Jones, Gros Ventre (#535)
Another portrait of this man, dated 1905, belongs to the Woolaroc Museum. (# 548) A half dozen Sharp photographs of Bill Jones, dressed slightly differently, are extant in the collections of the Charles M. Russell Museum. See related image, #265a as an example.
