Penciled on dust cover: ‘Stone’ 1908. Inscribed on paper attached to dust cover: ‘Stone’ Crow – 1908 – My best model for many years, particularly nudes in large pictures. He did like a nip once in a while and I could give him nothing stronger than listerine. My favorite war bonnet (from Custer Battle) he begged for so persistently for a big dance I let him have it – at the dance another Indian stole it – long time locating it & had to buy it over! – First & last time I loaned Indians things.
A painting titled Stone Young Crow Chief was exhibited in late 1908 in Cincinnati’s Closson Galleries. It is probably this work. It then traveled to Indianapolis, St. Louis and Kansas City. Stone is the same Crow man as Strikes His Enemy Pretty.
